Travel blogger Ana Silva O’Reilly, known to her followers as Ms. O, has launched a new campaign encouraging those making money partnering with travel brands to spit their own money on short term.
The initiative, called #PayingOurWay, suggests influencers support the industry by paying for travel and producing content for free, and stresses that they should be “patient” until freebies and press trips return.
Travel bloggers, vloggers, and influencers often enter into contracts with brands, which means they get free trips to produce content – whether Instagram posts, videos, or blogs – about their stay.
But O’Reilly, who has over 17,000 followers on Instagram, says influencers need to invest in the tourism industry while struggling to recover from the devastating effects of Covid-19, which saw global bans and restrictions decimated travel.

She says, “The impact of the pandemic on the travel industry is enormous and some small businesses may find themselves in a situation where they are really having trouble recovering.
“As a travel blogger and influencer, we are closely associated with the travel industry. If the travel industry fails to do this, travel bloggers will end up with very little to write about.
“It will be a while before many tour operators can work on brand partnerships again, but if we can continue to book our own trips and share our own experiences during this time, we should definitely do so. That is why I started the #PayingOurWay movement. “
Before the pandemic, O’Reilly had already pledged to pay about half of her own trips each year.
However, she admits that this may not be “doable” for all travel bloggers.
