Who We Are – Washington Beer Weblog

Kendall and Kim Jones – the people behind the blog.

I started the Washington Beer Blog in October 2008 to provide the public with a source of news and information about the burgeoning craft beer scene in Washington state. I chose the word blog because it was fashionable at the time, although today it really doesn’t describe what’s going on on this news and information site.

All these years later, most of the content is still being created by me, Kendall Jones. My wife, Kim Sharpe Jones, helps out with things like social media, promotions, and other less important areas of business.

When we started this endeavor, there were fewer than 100 breweries in the state. There are over 400 as of October 2020. It was a hell of a good trip. What we’re doing here on the blog has grown with the industry, and we’re increasingly posting stories that aren’t just about Washington-centric. Since our inception, we’ve published over 5,500 stories, an average of 1.25 stories a day for the past 12 years.

Something about myself

My name is Kendall Jones and I am a freelance writer based in Seattle, WA. While most people know me as the lead author of the Washington Beer Blog, I also write beer and travel stories for print publications. I also have broadcasting experience and have appeared on radio and television to talk about beer.

For many years my work appeared regularly in Seattle magazine, and I was often responsible for producing the annual “Beer Issue,” which was up to 24 pages. I also regularly write articles for the Sip magazine. I’ve also been featured in Celebrator Beer News, Beer Advocate, Beer West, 425 Magazine, Outdoors Northwest, and many others. Unfortunately, many of these publications have been lost to the forces of time and technology.

It is not uncommon for me to receive inquiries from people who want to search my brain for their new business, product, event, idea, etc. No wonder when you consider how long I’ve worked as an embedded reporter on the beer front. Please understand that I simply don’t have time to answer all of these questions. If you would like to work with me in such a capacity, please ask me about the consulting fees.

What drives this beer blogger?

While I am best recognized as a blogger, I don’t see myself as a beer blogger: I am a beer writer with a blog. Part of the reason I can say this is that it was published in print. I also adhere to a different standard than most bloggers. In all fairness, the word blog suggests something much more personal than what I usually do.

I try to act like a journalist and I always try honestly to adhere to the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics. I write to inform and educate and, hopefully, to entertain my readers and myself.

The Washington Beer Blog’s continuing mission is to promote the craft beer scene in Washington. Breweries, events, personalities, beers, themes and everything else.
